Torture and humiliation of tribal youth by the police in Telangana

On the night of March 23, 2022, Madavi Nagaraju (19 years) who was earlier tortured and humiliated by the police on March 10, 2022  has attempted suicide and died in hospital in Karimnagar in Nirmal district of Telangana. The deceased belonged to Munyalavillage in Dasturabadmandalin Nirmal district, Telangana. IRAC has taken strong note of a report titled “Tribal youngster allegedly beaten by SI ends life in Nirmal” published by Telangana Today on March 24, 2022. As per this report, the family members of Madavi Nagaraju alleged that he was assaulted by Dasturabad Sub-Inspector, Jyothimani when he was returning home after attending a function at his relative’s home on March 10, 2022. The Sub-Inspector also allegedly seized the motorbike and booked Nagaraju in a case of drunken driving.  Following the torture and humiliation, the 19-year-old teenager allegedly committed suicide and was admitted to a hospital in Karimnagar where he died on 23 March 2022. IRAC sought the immediate intervention of the National Human Rights Commission over the incident.
