Custodial torture of Adivasi farmer by police official in Jharkhand

On the intervening night of 23-24 February 2022, a 42-year-old Adivasi farmer named Anil Kumar Singh was brutally tortured by Ranjit Kumar Yadav, in-charge of Garu police station in Latehar district of Jharkhand. The victim is a resident of Kuku village under Garu police station in Latehar district of Jharkhand.

According to the victim, Anil Kumar Singh, he was sleeping at his home when police knocked at the door and asked to open the door at around 1:00 AM of 24 February 2022. The police officer identified himself as Garu police station in-charge Ranjit Kumar Yadav and took the victim to the police station. After reaching the police station, Mr. Yadav accused the victim of helping the Maoists/ Naxalites. When Anil Kumar Singh denied, he was brutally beaten with stick by Mr Yadav at his chamber at the police station. Due to brutal beating, the victim suffered deep injury marks on his body including buttocks. He was beaten till he fell unconscious. Later in the morning at around 9 AM of 24 February, the officer-in-charge Mr Yadav told the victim that he was picked up by mistake and let him go home.

IRAC has filed a complaint with the NHRC over the incident demanding a judicial inquiry into the matter, and the filing of an FIR against the accused police officer namely Ranjit Kumar Yadav, in-charge of Garu police station in Latehar district and prosecute him under the relevant sections of law including SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
