Manipur:  IRAC demands swift action and speedy justice over horrific incident of sexual assault and parading naked of two Kuki tribal women

New Delhi: In a media statement released today, the New Delhi-based Indigenous Rights Advocacy Centre (IRAC), which works for the welfare of the Scheduled Tribes in India, stated that it is totally horrified by the incident of capturing of two innocent Kuki-Zo tribal women and parading them naked while sexually assaulting them by a mob of men in the ongoing violence in Manipur.

A video clip of the horrific incident that went viral showed a large group of men parading two women who are completely stripped naked and molesting them while dragging them toward a paddy field. The incident reportedly took place on May 4, 2023. Various media reports suggested that the women were allegedly gang-raped later.

“The torture and looting of the dignity of women in broad daylight in such grotesque manner cannot be accepted or tolerated in any civilised society. IRAC condemns the incident in the strongest possible term and demands swift action from the State government. IRAC demanded a fair, unbiased investigation to be completed within a specific time period, and the perpetrators must be brought to justice at the earliest”, stated Mr Dilip Chakma, Executive Director, Indigenous Rights Advocacy Centre (IRAC).

IRAC has also appealed to both the communities to maintain peace.
