Tribals injured in firing by Mizoram police

On December 31, 2021, two tribals namely Rathindra Reang (14 years) and his father Ramuhai Reang (40 years) were injured in firing by Mizoram Police when they went in search of work in Mamit district of Mizoram. Both the victims are residents of Kanchanpur subdivision in Tripura state, bordering Mizoram.

As per reports by ANI, the father son-duo was hired by Mizoram police as wage workers from Tripura. Ramuhai Reang told the media persons from the hospital bed at Dharmanagar that a policeman whom he called Mazela fired at them all of a sudden when they were leaving the place.He said the Mizoram police officer allegedly called them at around 10 am on 31 December 2021 to work in his garden. At 12:30 pm, the father and son reached Mazela’s garden in Mizoram. But the police officer fired at them in which Ramuhai and his son were injured. While Ramuhai managed to flee to Tripura his son Rathindra was in Mizoram Police custody and was admitted to a hospital in Aizawl.

The abuse of power by the Mizoram Police is a gross human rights violation. In the light of the above, the IRAC sought the immediate intervention of the National Human Rights Commission.
