In June 2025, IRAC approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking urgent intervention to trace, rescue and rehabilitate 60 tribal women from Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district of Telagana who have been trafficked to other states through an organised network of brokers. The complaint highlighted the involvement of a police constable.
Taking cognizance of the matter, the NHRC issued directions to the Superintendent of Police, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district to submit a detailed action taken report (ATR), including steps taken to identify, trace, rescue, and rehabilitate the trafficked women.
Given the seriousness of the case, it was taken up for a hearing during a Camp Sitting of the NHRC at Hyderabad on 28 July 2025 in which IRAC represented the victims’ families. During the hearing, the Commission was informed by the police authorities that many of these trafficked women have been traced, rescued, and rehabilitated and the police constable has been dismissed from service.
On 14 November 2025, the NHRC recorded non-compliance with its earlier directions, noting that the Superintendent of Police, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, has failed to furnish the requisite report despite the lapse of considerable time. The Commission has now granted a final opportunity of four weeks to submit the complete report. It has further cautioned that failure to comply would compel the NHRC to invoke its powers under Section 13 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, including directing the personal appearance of the concerned authority before the Commission.
